Welcome to Eager Beaver WebWerx, home of the $300 website.
In this video blog, I wanted to actually discuss about one of the 9 most common website mistakes people make – Background Music. There were several people I’ve spoken to recently asked me about this saying they want background music playing on their business website. I asked them if it was for the visitor’s benefit or for their own benefit. They thought it was just cool to have it playing on there. I then asked them what their reaction was when they visit another website that starts playing background music automatically. They mentioned that they searched for the stop button right away, but they couldn’t find it. So if that’s the case, then why have background music at all if all it’s going to do is annoy your visitors?
The truth is, background music – especially ones that start up automatically once the website is loaded – is probably one of the most complained about features on a website. The internet public simply doesn’t want background music to begin play without warning. If the nature of a site involves music, provide the user with the option to start and stop the player.
Now, here’s an example I’m going to quickly show you here:
***** WARNING ***** This image below is a screenshot of the website. By clicking on the image, it will take you to that website. The website has a lot of moving colours and animation, and can hurt your eyes. If you suffer from epilepsy, please do not click on the link.
There’s actually quite a number of things that are wrong with this website, but as you can hear by the background music, the website started off with the sound of a cat screeching, and that can really freak someone out with the music playing. By looking at the screen, there is nowhere where you can actually get access to the player to turn off the music. In this particular case, you may think, “This is so annoying!”, and then you might actually shut off the website and go somewhere else.
At Eager Beaver WebWerx, I avoid placing background music on all my website designs in order to keep your visitors on your website for as long as possible. People want to have a pleasing experience when they visit your website. Why annoy your potential clients?
